ASUS P5K Pro

The P35 chipset is a staple diet for many-a true enthusiast looking for a good deal on a motherboard with plenty of overhead. The MSI Platinum/P35 Neo2-FR, the Abit IP35-E/Dark Raider, the Asus P5K-E/C and the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 are all hot property for well under £100.

While Gigabyte went to the radical step of relaunching its entire P35 range with the E-prefix recently to denote all its products are now “Energy Efficient”, Asus has instead introduced just a few additional products to its range, with its similar energy efficient EPU – one of these is the P5K Pro.

P5K Pro Features such as Socket 775 Intel Core 2 Duo, Quad and Extreme processor support including 45nm CPUs, as well as Intel Pentium 4, Pentium D and Celeron CPUs from 800-1333MHz FSB including Hyperthreading.
The box looks surprisingly appealing in its shiny blue attire, providing that is, you ignore the "energy efficiency" statistic pulled out of thin air at the bottom. It might as well be a statistic for the number of kittens saved or babies kissed, thanks to Asus' efforts against global warming.

While not every connector supplied gets a cable to match it, several SATA cables and even the power adapter are included, which is an acceptable number given how much it costs. The Asus Q-Shield makes it into the package too - while the rear I/O shield is not something many care about, those that do want to complete the Faraday cage in their case will be thankful that Asus’ one now comes with a spongy coating on the back, not the little metal prongs that either get in the way or cut your fingers to shreds.

In addition, there’s also the Asus Q-Connector and the manual, which is the usual fare: a very comprehensive document detailing motherboard layout, features, BIOS and software use – the only thing missing we could find is explanation and recommendation of some BIOS settings, but other than that the walk-throughs for using the product are top notch. Asus attention to detail is impressive for such an inexpensive product, and it definitely adds to the value of the product

Geforce 8400GS

Not much 3D performance, but a reasonable set of features open up media-centre potential. With most motherboards' integrated graphics controllers coming with just a solitary D-SUB video-out connector, it's no surprise PNY is trying to grab a piece of the low-end market with a cheap, discrete card.

It offers plenty the average onboard graphics processor doesn't. Its DVI-I port is HDCP-compatible, so with a DVI-to-HDMI converter it will connect to an HDTV. The only drawback is the lack of an onboard sound processor, so you'll still need to wire up your sound card to your speakers. The seven-pin TV-out socket is another plus - a converter in the box allows you to connect to a component or S-Video display.

Despite PNY's claims that the 8400GS offers "screaming gaming performance", we struggled to get a usable frame rate. The core GPU runs at 450MHz and the 256MB of GDDR2 RAM at 400MHz, and Call of Duty 2 at its lowest settings staggered along at 18fps, dropping to 9fps at medium. And, despite the 8400's DirectX 10 compatibility, our Call of Juarez test suggests you won't be getting the best from Microsoft's next-generation API. At the lowest settings, it ran at below 10fps. Perhaps PNY means screaming in frustration.

The fan is a tiny one, but we were pleased with the low-level noise put out, even when the card was under pressure. Against a stock Intel cooler it was barely audible; even when the CPU cooler was temporarily stopped it was still a minimal distraction. It's also pleasing that it doesn't require extra PCI Express power connectors.

While many companies would like you to believe that discrete graphics cards will somehow make mundane jobs like running Vista's Aero interface better, the truth is they won't. But there are plenty of other reasons to spend a relatively small sum on a discrete GPU and the 8400GS is a decent alternative to onboard graphics chips thanks to its HD features. Just don't expect to be able to use it for any more than the most gentle of gaming.

Gigabyte HD 3850

ATI's HD 3800 series appeared on the market a little over a month ago, and provided the buyers with an excellent value for money, especially since they are positioned between NVIDIA?s 8600 and 8800 series, and that?s a pretty big price gap that NVIDIA didn?t manage to fill. So if you can?t really afford an 8800GT, the two 3800 cards are right there for you. Today, we will be looking at the cheaper one, the HD3850 from Gigabyte.

ATI?s RV670 is designed as a cheaper version of the R600 GPU, which can be found in ATI?s first DX10 card, the 2900XT. 2900XT was a bad product, for several reasons. First, there was performance, since ATI didn?t manage to even come close to NVIDIA. Second one was price/performance ratio, since 2900XT was slower and more expensive than the 8800GTS 640. And third, the enormous heat it produced required a big and loud cooler. RV670, while not a direct successor to ATI?s flagship, gets rid of almost all the problems. It is produced by TSMC using a half-node 55 nm process, down from 80 nm used in R600. The 55nm process is responsible for the much lower power consumption, so ATI can now put only one PCI-E 6 pin connector on a card, unlike the previous one which had one 6 pin and one 8 pin connector for a total of 250W of power. Although HD3800 series is PCIE 2.0 compatible, they still require less power. Less power always means less noise, and in this case also means that the cooler can be of a less complex design, which reflects on the card?s price. Aside from the decrease from 80 to 55nm, ATI saved money equipping this GPU with only a 256-bit wide memory bus, and a 512-bit internal bus, which is exactly half of the R600. Everything else remained the same, so the chip has 320 stream processors, 16 texturing units and 16 render back-ends. After more than 6 months, some new features were made available, so RV670 now supports DirectX 10.1, which a few extra features to game developers, but we have yet to see any titles that support this. If game developers are as quick to implement them as they were with DX10, we will wait awhile. Even Microsoft will enable DX10.1 support in Windows Vista only with SP1, which is scheduled for H1 of 2008.

RV670 also supports UVD, which is its own video decoding engine, capable of supporting VC-1 and H.264 formats that are used in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD video content. Unlike NVIDIA?s PureVideo, UVD supports entropy decode for VC-1 video, but it is not a groundbreaking feature since VC-1 is less demanding to decode than H.264.

The RV670 also supports PowerPlay, which is a form of power management that modifies the clocks and voltages of the core if there is no need for extra performance, something that is normally seen in mobile graphics cards. AMD states that unlike on previous products, all 3D applications can make use of the full processing power of the card that was previously only reserved for full screen 3D applications.

Gecube Radeon HD3870 X3 Turbo

Despite a generally disappointing 2007 brought about by the less than spectacular R600 core, ATI salvaged the situation somewhat by quickly moving to a 55nm manufacturing process by the latter half of the year and launching the Radeon HD 3800 series as a competitive mid to high-end product competing on price rather than purely performance. This meant that the top GPU from ATI - the RV670 based Radeon HD 3870 - is not significantly any faster than the Radeon HD 2900 XT which uses the original R600.

What it does bring about however includes a core that produces less heat, aided by power saving technologies like ATI PowerPlay and with the Universal Video Decoder that was unfortunately missing on the Radeon HD 2900 XT. Support for new standards like DirectX 10.1, PCIe Express 2.0 are also much welcomed, if only for the sake of preparing for the future.

Together with its competitive pricing, the Radeon HD 3800 series has probably stopped the hemorrhaging of ATI's market share. It may not be a breakthrough success but it is nevertheless a respectable release. To win back the performance crown however, ATI is relying on a dual GPU implementation of the RV670 that is expected to be available in the coming weeks. We hope to bring you more details of this upcoming GPU soon but meanwhile, the healthy state of the Radeon HD 3800 series in the market is good news for the market and reflecting that, we have an overclocked 'turbo' version of the Radeon HD 3870 in our hands today from GeCube.
